November 2005: The Würzburg FH decides to purchase an X5 colibri pen computer. The reasons for this decision were the unique reflective display, the very robust design and the capability of connecting additional components.
At the Würzburg FH the colibri is primarily used for on-site recording of laser scans. In addition to weather resistance, display quality and battery life, the operating performance of the PC components of the colibri play a significant role, because laser scanning generally involves processing large amounts of data.
Another important application for the colibri is building surveys. In this case the outstanding display quality is the most important feature. It is supported by the user-controlled lighting for indoor work. An up-to-date mobile software program is used for site measurement along with the online connection to the tachymeter and other instruments, such as HandDISTO.
The Würzburg FH is interested in extending the applications of the colibri even more in future. As well as laser scanning and building surveys GPS surveys and GIS data recording are additional potential areas of application of the powerful computer.
